The longer handle is supposed to be a mallet handle, but has a plastic insert. Since they bend it's hard to apply pressure and still control the blade angle. These tools bend a lot in comparison and generally feel weird, even when used as palm tools. I usually use full-sized tools for walnut, cherry, and basswood carving in the round and relief carving.
